For the avid enthusiasts of Arnis, it was good news to know that our martial arts was already declared a national sports. Thanks largely to the efforts of Sen. Miguel Zubiri (a former world champion) and Mr. Raymund Velayo (the national arnis' association president).
In General Santos City, this sports is still in its infancy stage however, there is a growing interest for it to grow popularly side by side with Taekwondo and Judo. Given the national interest of Arnis as a national sports and its potential to be included in the physical education curriculum across the basic and higher educational levels, then arnis would truly blossom.
Mr. Eduardo Rizon is a local arnis afficionado. He believes its popularity will come in due time.

Happy Fishermen Clinched Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League
Four (4) teams from General Santos City slugged it out in the recently organized Nokia Smart National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League. The event was held at the Oval Area Covered Court, General Santos City last February and culminated this week.
Teams from St. Elizabeth Hospital, Vercide Engineering, Red Rockets and Happy Fishermen (Marchael Sea Ventures) fought in the 18-and-under tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala. Happy Fishermen's victory is due in part on the hardworking players who were selected from different schools in the city as well as the morale support from the coaching staff (Richard Pedregoza and Don Sallegue) and team owner, Michael Buhisan of Marchael Sea Ventures.
The Nokia NBTC D-League is envisioned to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas.

Sports Stacking at Gensan's Mall
It was nice to see young children so engrossed in the latest sports craze in the country. Better to see them in person as I had the opportunity to witness them play at Gaisano General Santos City.
Speed stacking now called sport stacking is now a hit among AB class youngsters who prefer the real challenge than the virtual ones.
Anyway, I met them (Terrence Benson and Billy Banes) at the mall. While the kids were neophytes in this sports, it seems like they have the potential given the kids' easy adaptability and dexterity to the sports.
In fact, they told me that a local boy is currently a Mindanao champion (they forgot his name). If my memory serves me right, a young Fil-Am (Steven Purruganan) is currently an icon in this sports.
Calling the potential sports patrons in town to form a sports stacking association. Let us help these budding youngsters.
By the way, the governing World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) was formed in 2001 for the purpose of promoting and governing sport stacking around the world. The association was originally titled World Cup Stacking Association (WCSA).
In 2005, the name was changed to its current WSSA in response to growing awareness that stacking is considered a sport.

Joseph dela Pena: Early KO Prediction
Gensan's local boxing analyst predicted an early knockout of Joshua Clottey in his coming fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Given the right preparation and lucky punch, this will spell victory for the Gensan's Pambansang Kamao.
